MMU BA (Hons) Photography Application

I'm currently studying at Leeds College of Art on the Art Foundation Course. I have really found myself as a photographer on the course and have continued to mature and develop from my time at A-Level. I am looking to continue this proggression and feel MMU, Manchester School of Art, is the right place to do this. I have put on this blog some photos that I feel represent my capabilities as a photographer and show a range in styles and techniques. See Below:

This photo is part of a nine piece collection based on the topic of the goverment spending cuts. I felt that the goverment have been quite patronising to the British public and talked to us in a child like manner. Not only that but I feel they have tried to take on this arrogant super hero like personar. I went back to my childhood and found a Power Ranger toy that I thought would embody the message I wanted to convey. I reduced all saturation in each of the photos in order for me to concentrate on composition and light.

This is a photo I captured of School Boys Tower, an iconic landmark for Giggleswick School, my former place of study. The photo was used as a front cover by school for there annual Chronicle this year. This is heavily used for advertising and has and will be seen by hundreds of people.

This image is accompanied by five others making up a set of final photos for a project I undertook, recording close up, some of the interesting and engaging beach deposits I have discovered in recent years.

Recentley we were set a brief in which we had come up with and present our Manifesto for life. This photo is part of a series of nine that contained a different message I wanted to say about myself and behaviour. I wanted it to seem that these pieces of paper were floating naturally into the shots, so I captured them at unusual angles. I focussed on the paper in order to blur the background giving emphasis to what is being said.

I recentley had the opportunity to go to Berlin on an art trip. I really enjoyed experiencing different monuments, art works and cultures there but also being in a strange and alien enviroment to the one that I'm used to. On a tour I was told a fact that Berlin is built for 9 million people but only 3 million live there currently. You really get that impression being there, a feeling of emptiness. To show that, I created a collection of long perspective photos that have a never ending and vacant feel.

This was a photo taken on the Scar above my house. This year I am going to apply for landscape photographer of the year, I am ambitious and really back the photos I have taken. Hopefully the process will give me valuable experince for the future. This will be one of the ten I send.

I wanted to try and keep evolving and adding a dynamic range of photos to my portfolio. Recently I created a group of pieces that are taken through stained filthy glass or through dirty windows. I then focussed on the marks made on the glass bluring the background giving some unusual and interesting pieces that hopefully show a more adventurous and even maybe a sinister nature to my visual recordings.

I really enjoy on an evening when I'm home venturing up to the top of the Scar that situates itself above my house. From there you get tremendous views but also are subject to some stunning sunsets. This photo is part of a collection of my best sunset photos. Some of the colours are mesmerising and completely breath taking.

This photo is part of a range of photos I have taken that contain reflections. It is one of my personal favourites as it has such a natural simplicity about it. The beautiful colouring of the houses, combined with the subtle reflection I think just makes a fantastic photo.

On my recent trip to Berlin I visited the Olympic Stadium and recorded a range of photos that display the historical nature of the stadium aswell as the modern interior developed because of the 2006 World Cup. I really want to try my hand at sports photography in the future as it is one of my main passions in life.

This is one of the best of the many photos I have taken when being out in Leeds City Centre.

This is a photo taken of Alnmouth Beach, a place where I discovered my love of photography. Hopefully I will get the chance to show you my portfolio so you can gain a better understanding of my ability and enthusiasm.
